Seine Dichtungen, die von einer milden und biedern Gesinnung zeugen, aber geringen poetischen Wert haben, sind vorzugsweise lyrischen Charakters, z. B.: »Hier sitz' ich auf Rasen, mit Veilchen bekränzt«, »Als der Großvater die Großmutter nahm«, im übrigen Fabeln und Erzählungen, poetische Episteln etc. Auch hat er »Klopstock und seine Freunde«, Briefwechsel (Halberst. 1820), herausgegeben. Schmidts »Leben und auserlesene Werke« erschienen in 3 Bänden (hrsg. von seinem Sohn und von Lautsch, Stuttg. 1826–28).[897] 22) Friedrich Wilhelm August, gewöhnlich S. von Werneuchen genannt, Dichter, geb. 23. März 1764 in Fahrland bei Potsdam, war erst Prediger am Invalidenhaus in Berlin, hierauf zu Werneuchen in der Mittelmark, wo er 26. April 1838 starb. Als Poet suchte er (besonders in dem von ihm herausgegebenen »Kalender der Musen und Grazien«, Berl. 1796–97) den von J. H. Voß in seinen Idyllen angeschlagenen Natürlichkeitston weiterzubilden und verfiel dabei in jenen platten Naturalismus, den Goethe in seinem Gedicht »Musen und Grazien in der Mark« und A. W. Schlegel im »Athenäum« treffend parodierten. Schmidts »Neueste Gedichte« erschienen Berlin 1815. Eine Auswahl aus seinen Gedichten veröffentlichte L.
